The HD600/4 audio amp by JL Audio is a class D amp that features a compact design and six hundred watts of power. JL Audio is one of the leading manufacturers of car amps, and considering how powerful and efficient their amps are, it’s easy to see why.
Overview and Features
The manufacturer went above and beyond with the design of the HD600. This model is incredibly powerful, efficient, small, and utilizes single cycle control, which is a type of core amp technology. Single cycle control works by correcting output into each switching cycle, for more efficient power delivery, and an innovative design that allows the amp to run cool, so you won’t have to deal with overheating.
The plug-in connectors for the speaker and power connection allow you to mate both the power and speaker connections directly to the connectors easily and quickly. When you clamp down each of the wires you’ll have a clear view of what you’re doing, which means you don’t have to mount the amp beforehand and instead can do so as the last step of the installation process. On the back of the amp is where you’ll mate these connections and each one offers a tight fit.
Aside from the fact that this design makes it super easy to install the amp, it also makes it simple to remove it, which will come in handy if you have it installed in your trunk and you temporarily need more space or need to access an item that’s stored behind the amp, such as a spare tire.
The amp’s power and sound quality are impressive, while it can’t quite compete with the Lanzar Amplifier Monoblock which offers six thousand watts of power, it does offer a solid performance that works well to power a sub or a pair of upgraded speakers. It can also easily drive both your speakers or a sub without overheating and with zero distortion. The amp features a removable control panel that has a positive lock, which prevents it from making noise or vibrating.
The RCA inputs are ground isolated, which is a huge plus for car owners.
The amp’s transients are clear and sharp, and the sound is very smooth. When you push it hard, you’ll be able to detect the anti-clipping circuitry activating, but this isn’t a big issue. For a six-hundred-watt amp, the fact that the fuse size is only 50A is pretty surprising.
This is a class D amp. If you’re not familiar with car amps and what this means, class D amps are different from other classes of amps in terms of power efficiency. This equals to zero power being wasted. A class A amp will push their transistors under load constantly, zapping power and often causing the amp to overheat. When the power of an amp isn’t fully utilized, the transistors tend to waste energy, which is then converted into heat.
Since this is a class D amp, it uses a different type of transistor that’s switched on and off constantly. When it’s in the on position, the HD600’S transistor is fully conducting, so it never wastes energy. Obviously, when it’s in the off position there will also be no waste of energy.
Because this amp is designed to switch the current off and on at a much faster frequency, it’s able to achieve zero wasted power and maximum efficiency. However, the amp tends to have some problems of its own. As an example, having a pulsed output can produce signal distortion at the higher end of the frequency range.
